Three years ago, Bice was perfectly happy. He was working in a guitar shop in Birmingham, Ala., and scrambling for every gig he could find, whether it meant playing acoustic shows in a cafe or club shows with his longtime band, SugarMoney. He was surrounded by music day and night, and he figured that was about all a man could ask for in life.

On July 4, the 2008 Hero Awards — sponsored as a fundraiser for Feed the Children (www.feedthechildren.org) — will air in Los Angeles on Channel 13, 8-10 p.m. This new awards show, hosted by actor Dean Cain, star of “Lois and Clark: the New Adventures of Superman” — features numerous stories, often in re-enactments and interviews.
